If we want to sully God’s honor in the minds of others, the surest thing we can do is to avenge the insult. God is so much greater than man, that our highest attempts to praise him, are in comparison blasphemies… though — God graciously accepts these attempts.
If we dueled everyone who’s praise was less than God deserved… judging the slight ourselves — we would insult God by implying that he needs us to defend his honor. God’s honor is not so weak to be diminished by the worst of slanders, nor to be increased by praises… We cannot flatter God, because we cannot speak what is deserved. Fortunately for us, we are ignorant children. and are judged by what is in our heart.
