sonnet 9

Is it shameful to black a widow’s eye,
That blow could mark a man throughout his life?
Ah! if thou strike one that should hap to die,
The world will avenge the husbandless wife;
The world will be her widower and weep
And no form of thee shall be left behind,
When confined to hell, in the devil’s keep
By the state slain, with their revenge in mind:
Look! what waste when anger doth a life spend
Shifts life to death, yet the world enjoys it;
But waste hath in the world to someday end,
And salvation will come one day to it.
No love greater than in that bosom sits
That could forgive each sin a man commits.
