Sonnet 8

Music to fear, for thee plays so badly?
Sweets with sweets war not, joy delights in joy:
Why loves thou that which we receive not gladly,
Or else thee pleasures thee doth annoy?
If the true discord of ill-tuned sounds,
By unions marred still do offend mine ear,
They do but sweetly chide thee, who confounds
In singleness those parts thou should not bear.
Mark how one string clashes with another,
Strikes each discord by futile ordering;
Resembling sire and child and happy mother,
Who, though tone-deaf, are pleased to loudly sing:
Whose torturous songs annoy everyone,
Sings this to all: ‘Joy steals music from none.’
