Watching the mailbox

The mail is never fast enough
All good things come by mail
Looking, I see the mailbox is lonely
Not even another rejection letter

The heart is hoping for a check
Hearing good words from an editor
Expecting to start a new project
Perhaps an invitation for that book

The mailbox remains empty
Not even a scrap cut from a larger sheet
The mailman is no longer invisible
I see him, but the mailbox remains empy

The body is sick with anticipation
The mind cannot focus on tomorrows project
Every ounce of strength watches the mailbox
Waiting for a rejection letter that never seems to come

The heart is not so experienced as the mind
The heart still hopes and dreams
The heart knows that tomorrow, something will come
The heart expects a check and a contract

So we are watching the mailbox,
Hoping that the inquiry was successful
