When the magi came, they first visited king Herod and told him they saw the star of a new king. Herod was the type of man who would murder his own family to protect his position, so he wanted nothing more than the death of this child.
An angel came to the magi, and to Joseph, Mary’s husband. To the magi, the message was to leave the country quietly, without speaking with Herod again. To Joseph, the message was to flee to Egypt for safety. Herod waited, and when he grew tired of waiting he ordered all the babies in Bethlehem killed. On December 28, we remember this evil act, which is described in Matthew 2.
